Beauty of Media and Information Literacy

As we indulge ourselves more into the ever-advancing world of technology, it is of utmost importance that we become media and information literate. Surely, the 21st century skills will be greatly challenged as there will be lots of instances that we have to use them to our advantage. What could be the importance of being media and information literate? How does it affect people personally, socially and professionally?
According to Jeff Wilhelm (2000), “Technology has everything to do with literacy and being able to use the latest electronic technologies has everything to do with being literate”. The United States National Forum on Information Literacy, on the other hand, defines information literacy as “… the ability to know when there is a need for information, to be able to identify, locate, evaluate, and effectively use that information for the issue or problem at hand”.
As there would be countless times we gather and receive series of information, it is a must that we know how we analyze and evaluate such information at hand. Not only is the process of using critical thinking skills, careful analysis, and prudent judgment is measured in gathering information but also how we make wise decisions and react appropriately to such information. We have to know how to carefully assess the quality of information we receive before sharing such information and applying it to real-life situations.
Information sources, may it be in print, broadcast or on-screen, have widely affected the quality of information used by people. It is for certain that being media literate and information literate both affects people, may it be personally, socially and even professionally.
Nowadays, people have been completely engrossed by the use of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube; which has ruled almost over all social networking sites. I, for one, have one account in Facebook and YouTube. These social media sites have greatly helped me connect with my friends and classmates and be updated to school and class announcements posted online. Additionally, there are countless activities that needs Microsoft skills so we really indulge ourselves into honing our digital skills. Moreover, there are school assignments and projects that badly needs gathering of information and processing of data, so critical assessment over these information is a must.
Unfortunately, engaging myself into social media sites and Internet, I have also observed that people are totally okay with expressing their thoughts openly—even those that are not necessary at all. Yes, from sharing adventures and laughter in Facebook to posting heartbreaks and despair in Twitter, social media is a free world. Internet greatly helps us connect to each other even over long distances. Apart from using these social media sites for entertainment purposes, it also serves as the means for self-expression. However, it is another matter when it is about the occurrences of cyberbullying in these social media sites—one bad comment from an anonymous audience and it may affect another’s self-esteem and pride; worse, it may greatly damage one’s reputation and identity. We do not only get ourselves caught up to media but also know and apply the etiquette and norms of engaging ourselves into media.
In one’s profession and career, being media and information literate is also being integrated. With the advent of technology, most profession, if not all, make use of the products of technology for convenience and make their work easier and faster. There are also countless instances that profession, like lawyers, doctors, reporters and researchers, requires gathering information and thoroughly analyzing facts and details as they are vital to their work. They use their critical thinking skills to make it that the data they have gathered are validated and are off utmost importance.
I, as a passionate student and an aspiring accountant, have trained myself to be knowledgeable into the fields of Microsoft; since I know that most work-related activities to be done in the future would greatly use this program. Microsoft Excel, for example, is one common computer program used by accountants and I have made myself learn the basics. As time permits, I would like to be more skilled into these computer programs. Moreover, as an ABM student, we are tasked into analyzing transactions and should make it that we know how to balance the assets to the liabilities and equity. It is such a strenuous task as we process transactions and where to place them.
Undoubtedly, media and information literacy is essential in this ever-changing world. May it be for personal means, social means or professional means, careful judgment and critical analysis to relevant information is badly necessary. As what a Ghanaian diplomat, Kofi Annan says, “Acquiring literacy is an empowering process, enabling millions to enjoy access to knowledge and information which broadens horizons, increases opportunities and creates alternatives for building a better life”.
